Rhode Island Red Hen

It's time again for the Unique Women in Business monthly blog hop. This month's theme is animals. So in case you didn't know, my favorites are chickens. They are wonderful garden helpers, providing natural fertilizer and pest control. Best of all they provide healthy nutritious eggs. Don't believe the hype, those grocery 'vegetarian chicken' eggs aren't all they are cracked up to be. (pun intended).

Chicken eggs

Chickens thrive on grubs, worms, and other tasty bugs hiding under potted plants and rocks. It's great funto move the rocks or pots for the chickens and watch them scratch and peck.

Black Star Hens

The other thing I love about chickens is that they are the closest living relative to dinosaurs. In case you haven't seen it this TED talk is pretty cool. Jack Horner wants to reverse engineer dinosaurs from chickens.

I have had a lot of fun with my egg soap molds. If you know any other chicken fans, these soaps would make great gifts. I have Blue sea salt spa soap eggs (Arucauna hens lay blue or green eggs) and Tan Chocolate Soap eggs, White Leghorn eggs coming soon. :) Hope you like them.

Love your soaps! Now I notice 2 different color eggs... what makes them a different color? I thought store bought were white, because they bleached the shell. Inquiring minds want to know. : )

Most of the brown and black hens lay brown eggs. The grey Araucana's with the slate grey legs lay blue eggs, the Leghorns (big white mean birds) lay white eggs. Leghorns are the only birds that I don't like. They beat up my other gentle birds too much and they run like mad.

Your hens are totally beautiful and your soap so cute. What a great idea! A friend of our gives us now and then their surplus of freshly layed eggs from their free roaming (pet) chickens. Wonderfull taste with a yolk dark yellow almost to the point of being orange. Birgitte
